Drupal 5.0 And Joomla 1.5
This weekend, I spend some time to try out the latest version of Drupal (which is 5.0 in number) and also the latest development of the great Joomla 1.5. This both CMS looks great to me. They’ve their own strengths and weaknesses. But that’s not the main point. The main point is they both believe that open source matters.
What I like the most about Drupal is the out-of-the-box URLs just great to me and it can be improved with one easy addon. The code is generally lightweight and well-optimised. Meanwhile, Joomla has a great graphical interface in separate area of website.
Ok. I’m not going to make a comparison side-by-side between both CMS. Let’s take simple comparison by using Google Trends. Google Trends is a tool that analyzes Google web searches and that can visualize search trends over time using so called “search-volume graphs”. These graphs usually provide a good mechanism to compare the popularity of two or more products.
Here is the search-volume graph that compares Drupal (red), Joomla (blue) & Xoops (orange):

Its clear. Joomla is more popular than Drupal & Xoops. Joomla has been growing a lot faster. Why? But The open source IBM project for instance, decided to go with Drupal over Joomla because Drupal provided the right combination of framework and flexibility to break out of the framework when needed to get the job done. What say you? Popularity or Quality?
Go Open Source!

I am a Free and Open Source Software lover, advocate. I would like to see Open Source grow, and more users being able to use and understand it. I would like to continue to become a part of this growing community, and to grow with it!

I think we should let Joomla to mature like Drupal to compare. Joomla 1.5 is different from 1.0.X series, therefore it seems not very fair for us to say anything about it and drupal, lets say 2 years from now? Will see what will happen then.
