Hey! Not that “tomboy”. Errrr… Tomboy is a famous desktop note-taking application for Linux.
I have been using Eclipse for quite some time now. I prefer Eclipse as development IDE because its ease of use. The overall design of Eclipse keeps the tools you need immediately at your fingertips.

Using APT to install Eclipse on your Debian / Ubuntu machine will give you the old version of Eclipse. I would like to share with you my steps to install Eclipse 3.3 manually.

1. You’ll need JRE installed on your machine.

sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre

2. Download Eclipse SDK from its main site (Choose Eclipse Classic) :

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

3. Extract the eclipse download and move to opt.

tar xzf wtp-all-in-one-sdk-1.0-linux-gtk.tar.gz
sudo mv eclipse /opt/eclipse cd /opt sudo chown -R root:root eclipse
sudo chmod -R +r eclipse
sudo chmod +x `sudo find eclipse -type d`

4. Then create an eclipse executable

sudo touch /usr/bin/eclipse
sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/eclipse

5. Create the file

sudoedit /usr/bin/eclipse

With the content:

#!/bin/sh
#export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=”/usr/lib/mozilla/”
export ECLIPSE_HOME=”/opt/eclipse”

$ECLIPSE_HOME/eclipse $*

6. If you use gnome, create a shortcut

sudoedit /usr/share/applications/eclipse.desktop

With the content :

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Eclipse
Comment=Eclipse IDE
Exec=eclipse
Icon=/opt/eclipse/icon.xpm
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=GNOME;Application;Development;
StartupNotify=true
Configure

That’s it. You can start your eclipse by typing
eclipse
in your terminal. The new Eclipse a bit faster than before. You should have a try.

Qemu -smb option does not work on Debian/Ubuntu because of a bug in Samba package. Rebuild the Samba package without the –with-fhs option to work around it. But you still can use samba without “-smb” option. Lets say you have ubuntu as host OS and WindowsXP guest OS.

Install samba server on host OS :

sudo apt-get install samba smbfs

Then make a folder :

mkdir /home/smd/public_share
chmod 777 /home/smd/public_share
sudo cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.bak
; security = user
...

Replace with :

security = share

Insert the following lines at the end of file :

[public]
comment = Public Folder
path = /home/smd/public_share
public = yes
writable = no
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
force user = nobody
force group = nogroup

save the edited file. then,

sudo testparm
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

Now, you can run your guest OS.

qemu -hda winxp.img -localtime -kernel-kqemu -m 384 -boot c

Open your shared folder :

Start Menu -> Run -> \\10.0.2.4\

While connecting to GoogleTalk/MSN, if you see this message:

Server require TLS/SSL for this connection

That’s mean you did not compile Pidgin with SSL support. All you have to do is to install required ssl.

sudo apt-get install libssl-dev libnss3-dev

Recompile and all done! Have a try.

Greetings From Sintok!

Over the past few days, I have been playing with BackTrack 2 Final. I run BackTrack on the top of Qemu. When I ran qemu, I got the following error:

Could not configure ‘/dev/rtc’ to have a 1024 Hz timer. This is not a fatal error, but for better emulation accuracy either use a 2.6 host Linux kernel or type ‘echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq’ as root.

To settle this error, you can type

echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq
as root. But it will appeared again after reboot. To ensure we has 1024 Hz timer after reboot, add an entry to /etc/sysctl.conf:

sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf
dev.rtc.max-user-freq=1024

It works for me and it should works for you too. Perhaps, give it a try if you’re facing the same problem.
